CBS continues to embrace online video streaming, introducing a second standalone network today that will be dedicated entirely to entertainment news.
According to TechCrunch, the new streaming network is called ET Live, and is a project from CBS Interactive and Entertainment Tonight, which is owned by CBS TV. The streaming service is free of charge, but supported by ads — meaning you’ll have to sit through ads just like traditional TV. Unlike the Entertainment Tonight television show, which runs for 30 minutes every weekday on CBS, ET Live will carry entertainment news 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This will include “breaking news, celebrity interviews, features, behind-the-scenes and red carpet coverage, plus trends stories across celebrity fashion, beauty, and lifestyle.”
CBS is set to bring on a plethora of new talent to host different series to fill the ET Live schedule, but Entertainment Tonight regulars will also make appearances. Entertainment Tonight averages about 5 million viewers a night, but its online counterpart reaches as many as 20 million unique visitors a month, according to TechCrunch. Providing a constant source of entertainment news to cord cutters, and reaching a new audience with a dedicated online network does make sense for the company.
ET Live is available starting today through a multitude of options. It will live on ET Live’s homepage for browser users, but standalone apps will also be available for iOS, Android, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire TV devices. It will also be integrated into CBS All Access, the network’s standalone entertainment streaming service, and CBSN, the network’s news streaming service.
